Last week I had the pleasure of playing Royal Portrush in the Guinness & Oysters World Final. I had never played Royal Portrush before and was looking forward to seeing the new holes that have been installed in readiness for 2019 Open Championship. The course including the new holes and the facilities surpassed my expectations, congratulations to Wilma Erskine and her team and I know that the players will have a great time both on and off the course, as the Irish hospitality is second to none (the Guinness was flowing). Due mainly to the efforts of my fellow team members I became part of the inaugural World Champions. The Guinness & Oysters World Final is an event that is growing and will have entries from teams in more countries next year, I hope we get the chance to defend the title!!
Following my time in Northern Ireland I travelled straight to Goodwood to play in the Golfing 4 Life Invitational event. Jimmy Byers and Bill Curbishley have done a fantastic job of creating a group of young players who mainly come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Not only are the players extremely talented but they are great young individuals who I believe will do well at whatever they turn their hand to. I am delighted that we could help in a small way by raising over £20,000 for G4L last year at our Club Leadership Summit Charity auction. Jimmy arranged for ex US Open Champion Michael Campbell to be present who gave the assembled golfers a great insight into how to beat Tiger Woods coming down the stretch in a major. Goodwood should also be congratulated as Stuart Gillet’s team did a great job as always. G4L is connected to the Teenage Cancer Trust and we are busy working together on a great event in the States in 2018 to raise money for both TCT and Teenage Cancer America, so watch this space.
Finally football and Spurs went into the international break on a couple of good wins and with Harry Kane on fire. Great to see that England picked another one of our young players in Harry Winks and hopefully we can beat all expectations and achieve some national pride at the world cup. Before then I am sure the Spurs players will continue to enjoy the best non fat bacon butties from the LilyBites van based at the training ground in Enfield.
Until next time COYS
